History of Medical Astrology or Astromedicine

Astrology has been used in healing and medicine since ancient times. In the western world it originated in Egypt with its earliest texts being ascribed to Hermes Trismegistos. It was taught in the Egyptian Mystery Schools and passed down to ancient Greece, where it was taught by Plato and practiced by the Father of Medicine, Hippocrates, as well as the well-renowned physicians, Nostradamas and Paracelus. In fact physicians’ firstly learned astrology before they even began there school for medicine because it was so synonymous with healing. Medical Astrology became utilized vastly by the healers and alchemists of the Hermetic Tradition during the Renaissance and middle ages. In the 17th century, Nicholas Culpeper, an English astrologer and herbalist created a Materia Medica of herbs that corresponded with the planets, which are still in use today. Interestingly, the words plants and planets are so similar, which most likely signifies an ancient wisdom regarding their correspondence.

What is Evolutionary Astromedicine?

This is an innovative and tranformative blend of Evolutionary Astrology in modern times with the Medical Astrology of Hermetic Tradition. It reopens the treasure trove of ancient wisdom used in healing that has been occult or held in secret since the middle ages. Now, in the new Age of Aquarius, we can honor the wisdom of our ancestors through the lens of the modern eye with Evolutionary Astrology. EA is astrology reincarnated to a more universal appeal than its astrological predecessor. It has opened up the perception of a person’s astrological natal chart to a blueprint of the soul that has lived a succession of lives. This opens up many dimensions of the chart, including the emotional and psychospiritual layers. Overall, it’s not just about healing physical symptoms; it’s a holistic vision on healing the soul, taking into consideration karma and dharma and evolution of the soul.

Trudy's Approach

My underlying premise combines modern Evolutionary Astrology principles with the classical wisdom from the Hermetic tradition as explained above, in the Evolutionary Astromedicine section. I utilize the astrology chart as a diagnostic tool to prevent disease or injuries. The signs, planets and elements of the chart correspond with plants, gemstones and even vitamins/minerals. Therefore, herbs, foods, gemstones and supplements can be prescribed accordingly to optimize health and vitality. The chart’s planets, signs and elements also correspond with organs and body parts. Thus, I can potentially identify organs or body parts that may need special attention.

Significant influences to my counseling style have been Carl Jung, Psychiatrist, and Carolyn Myss, Medical Intuitive, regarding their principles of Archetypal Psychology. (For more on these authors, see book recommendations). The planets and signs correspond with unconscious archetypes of this psychology. From an emotional and mental perspective, the astrologer can recognize the roots of disease, deeper than the physical symptoms, through understanding these archetypes. By increasing awareness about our unconscious archetypes and how they interplay, we acquire inner balance and equanimity for optimal health and well-being.

At the most profound level, I use guidelines of Shamanism for processing and healing illness or trauma. My viewpoint sees llness/Trauma as Transformational or Shamanic Illness/Trauma and positively interprets these seemingly unfortunate situations as a spiritual call for Self-Realization. My integration of Astrology and Shamanism is a synergetic healing art modernly referred to as Astroshamanism.
